Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) Scholarship

2009-2010 Award Recipient

Lauren Turnburke

Why this Scholarship was Established

The University of North Carolina at Asheville’s chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) was established in December 2004. BGS is the most selective business honor society in the world, with membership granted only to the top 10% of graduating seniors and the top 10% of second semester juniors in AACSB accredited business institutions.

Each year, the UNC Asheville chapter will offer a $500.00 scholarship to a deserving student. BGS will provide a $500.00 matching contribution (total scholarship of $1000.00), so long as the UNC-Asheville chapter achieved an 85% or greater membership acceptance rate in the previous year.

 Criteria for award

Any current BGS member, or any student who is invited to become a member during the annual Spring Induction Ceremony, is eligible. Selection is based upon the following criteria:

  • Must be a declared Management & Accountancy department major
  • Must be enrolled for one academic year following the award
  • Scholarship must be used during the student’s senior year of study
  • Demonstrate academic merit
  • Demonstrate honesty and integrity
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership potential
  • Demonstrate citizenship
  • Demonstrate service to UNC Asheville’s Management & Accountancy department and to the community

Selection Process

A department selection committee will recommend a candidate for the award to the full department faculty. The department chair will make the final decision on awarding the scholarship.

Award Announcement

The award will be announced during the Department of Management and Accountancy Annual BGS Induction Ceremony and the Awards Gathering prior to the end of the Spring Semester.
