James L. Yearout Degree Completion Scholarship

James L. Yearout

Why the Scholarship was Established

Because of his belief in the value of education and his desire to support upper level students in the Department of Management and Accountancy at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Mr. James L. Yearout, through his estate as represented by Dr. Robert D. Yearout and Donald Mercer of Mercer Incorporated, Waynesboro Virginia, co-executers, made an initial gift of five thousand dollars to the University of North Carolina at Asheville Foundation, Inc.

The initial donation was allowed to accrue income through consulting fees and matching gifts from Management and Accountancy Alumni until it reached a balance of ten thousand dollars. At that point, the net income of the fund was and is used to provide scholarships for students attending the University of North Carolina at Asheville. The amount available for the scholarship varies from year to year depending on the amount of income earned by the base fund.

Criteria for the Award

Applications are submitted to the Department of Management and Accountancy prior to April 15 of the preceding academic year. Selection is based upon the following criteria:

  • Declared major in accounting, industrial and engineering management, or management
  • Be within 30 hours of graduation
  • Demonstrate academic excellence
  • Be a non-traditional student
  • Need may be used as a criteria for making the award, but is not required

Selection Process

A departmental selection committee will recommend a candidate for the award to the full department faculty. The name of the candidate for the scholarship will then forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid by the Chairman of the Management and Accountancy Department. The Office of Financial Aid will make the final decision on awarding the scholarship.
