Mission and Student Learning Outcomes

Our Mission Statement:

The Department of Management and Accountancy provides undergraduate degree programs of excellence in Management, Accounting and Industrial and Engineering Management. Our mission is to develop lifelong learners who are effective communicators and who understand that learning is a collaborative, reflective process that requires the integration of knowledge from many sources. The faculty supports our mission through excellent teaching, scholarly activity, and service to the university, the local community, the state, and their profession. Our students and graduates support our mission through active learning, research, and participation in service to the university, our local community, and the state of North Carolina.

Our distinctive setting within a public liberal arts university contributes to a focus on the human element as part of the management decision making process. Students are encouraged to develop a respect for integrity, an understanding of diversity, and an awareness of the importance of globalization as part of the discipline of management. Our small size facilitates intellectual interaction among students and faculty, and active learning enables students to become effective contributors to both their professional and social environments.

Management Program Assurance of Learning Goals and Objectives

G1: As an approach to lifelong learning, our students will identify situations where decisions are necessary. They will find and assess alternatives in a way that incorporates their understanding of the financial, social, environmental and ethical impacts of the decision. The graduates of the program should be prepared to integrate the course content they have taken within our department, the self-knowledge they have gained during their university experience and the broad background acquired through their liberal studies to generate thoughtful decisions. In turn, they can support the decisions to others in a way that is both logical and articulate.

  • Objective 1: That the students demonstrate the ability to identify the key decisions to be made as they read and discuss cases, problems, simulations, and current events.
  • Objective 2: That the students articulately write their assessment and justify the decisions they reach about open-ended issues.
  • Objective 3: That the students consistently incorporate an appropriate variety of criteria while weighing alternatives. Where appropriate, ethical, legal, financial, social, interpersonal, and environmental criteria should be applied along with a recognition of the international implications.
  • Objective 4: That the students bring their decisions forward and defend them rationally, while articulating thoughtful consideration of differing decisions on the same topic.
  • Objective 5: Students will utilize feedback that would encourage them to reconsider their decision or to affirm it.

Objective 1: That each graduate should have the ability to effectively articulate and express knowledge and ideas through oral communication.
